Welcome back to the second half of our two-part series on how to stay healthy at home with the help of in-home care! As you get older, most people assume that getting sick comes with the package.


While that is often true, with a few deliberate lifestyle choices and assistance getting to and from the doctor's office, you can significantly reduce your risk of illness and ailments that frequently plague seniors. Last time we covered the need for sunscreen, immunizations, physical activity, and regular checkups and now we'll continue with how to treat your aging stomach right to get the energy and nutrients you need.


5) Optimize Your Diet

Many people think of an elderly diet as plain rice and unseasoned chicken but eating healthy doesn't have to mean bland or boring. There are a few components like lean meats, less fat and carbs, and more fruits and vegetables but there are also thousands of delicious recipes that conform to basic good eating habits.


Even if you have special diet restrictions, you can still enjoy eating simply by getting a little creative in the kitchen or knowing where to order from. Rather than worrying about restricting your diet, just optimize it. Work with your caregiver to design recipes that make you feel good and balance well with your own personal metabolism.


6) Quit Smoking

Okay, we know you get this everywhere, but if you smoke after retirement, you should probably quit now more than ever. Yes, you've been doing it for a long time but by quitting now, you could give yourself back at least a few extra years with clear lungs and no addiction. Quitting cigarettes will help you breathe more freely, maintain a healthy level of activity, and make the most of your retirement funds because, let's face it, cigarettes have gotten really expensive these days.


7) Prevent Falls

Falling is one of the biggest risks for most older people, even active healthy ones who are still managing on their own. As you age, not only do your knees and hips become more unstable but impact becomes a bigger risk than most other dangers you encounter. A single misstep could lead to hospitalization and months of boring recovery.


The best way to prevent a fall is to practice flexibility and strength exercises and ask your caregiver to help keep the floor clear of small items and obstacles. If your stability is on its way out, installing grab-bars in your home is a great way to prevent potential falls around the house.


8) Play Brain Games

Finally, your body isn't the only part of you that needs regular working out. While you shouldn't buy the common myth that all old people get memory or cognitive problems, your memories do need to be refreshed and your brain needs stimulation. Now that you're retired and there's less to worry about, it can be all too easy to fall into complacency.


Make sure to spend some time actively remembering things you'd like to recall more easily later. This might be a good time to tell stories of favorite memories to your caregiver or to write a few memories down for later generations to enjoy. This kind of active recollection will refresh your memory, reconnect you to related memories, and keep your mind ready to recall things on short notice.


There's no one key to staying healthy as you age, but a comprehensive solution is simply to take good care of yourself no matter what else is going on. Wearing sunscreen, going for walks, eating healthy, and keeping your mind sharp are all great ways to make sure you're still spry and active for many years to come.
